When Life beckons you it’s best to follow because two broken wrists and a broken arm later is a high a price to pay

When Life beckons it’s best to follow …..

When Life beckons it’s best to follow …..

For as long as I remember Charlotte had known she was ready to move on.  I share this account not to vilify Charlotte but to illustrate what can happen to the best of us when we resist the flow of life, believing as we do that we know better.

A committed NHS district nurse, Charlotte had run up against a toxic individual who was making her working life a misery.  Even before this Charlotte had been working with me, using Feng Shui to prepare her home for a sale and switch career to the private nursing world where she could be her own boss and more in control of her time.

Life beckoned but she refused to follow.  The house although ready, never went on the market.  Her resignation that required a gobsmacking 8-month notice period, never happened.

A few months later, Charlotte broke not only one but both wrists in a fall on the job.  A suitable metaphor if any.  Tests also indicated the early onset of osteoporosis.  But after months of convalescing she returned to the job.

Then Covid struck.  Nurses like Charlotte were run ragged to meet the demand.  Rather than slow down and her job become lighter, it sped up and became heavier.

Days rolled into weeks blurred into months.  Charlotte shed the toxic boss only to acquire another even worse while everyone around her struggled with punishing shifts.

This time Life interceded with a big HALT sign because Charlotte wasn’t going there on her own.  This time she broke her right arm. At which point even her teenage daughter passed comment.  “Mum, isn’t this a sign that something needs to change?”

While Charlotte refused to respond to the gentle nudges, Life had no option but to up the ante.  While Charlotte continued to listen to the voice in her head – that logical, thought-driven mind that opts for the cautious approach using facts and figures that are known to it already – she was resisting life.  And there would be more trouble ahead.

While dormant lay her instinctive, inspirational, intuitive mind that was capable of addressing the problem in a different way to reach a creative solution.   By continuing to block out its sheer genius by holding on tight to an outcome she had predetermined, a breakthrough was never going to happen.

It takes a challenging situation like the one Charlotte faced to generate the force needed to bring about long-overdue change.  The problem is we have a habit of bottling up energy rather than surrendering to it and allowing it to flow where it’s needed most for transformation.  Meanwhile resistance to the flow of life makes us anxious, stressed – and accident prone!

Well done Charlotte for heeding the message and going with the flow in the end.
